KABALORE. Prince David Kijanangoma, who recently declared himself king of Tooro, was on Tuesday arraigned before the chief magistrate’s court in Fort portal and charged with criminal tress pass and inciting violence.
Prince Kijanangoma was arrested on Monday after addressing a press conference at the king’s palace at Rwengoma in Fort Portal town. He said he had been offered the palace as a contact place as he plans to dethrone king Oyo from Kaluziika palace.
Appearing before the chief Magistrate, mr Samuel Emokol, the prince pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted a shs 1 million cash bail. His three sureties were bonded at shs 1 million each, not cash.
“this court is not in position to gauge the popurality of the accused to incite violence when bailed. Security organs will take charge in case of violence. However, the accused is advised to refrain from any activities that may cause vilence,’’ mr Emokol said.
He will re-appear in the same court on April 21 for further hearing of the case.
After his release, business in Fort Portal town came to a standstill as his supporters rode from court premises in Booma to the town centre in a motor cade. They prostrated before the prince who was being driven in an open roof car as they swept the rood.
At Rwengoma palace, his uncles performed rituals, sitting him in a traditional chair.
Prince Kijanangoma accusses king Oyo of abandoning his kingdom duties and preferring to live in Kampala.
Prince Kijanangoma is the son of the late Paul Kijanangoma, the eldest son of Sir George Rukidi, the former king of Tororo. He is also the younger brother of Happy Kijanangoma, who was shot dead in 1999. Former Tororo kingdom prime minister John Katuramu was convicted over his murder and is currently serving a life sentence in Luzira prison.
