STRENGTENING CAPACITY FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION IN MUBENDE DISTRICT
Recent changes in weather and climate have affected crop and livestock production and local community livelihoods in mubende district and one of the major constraints to dealing with effects of climate change is not having appropriate information and knowledge about weather and climate or lack of techniques to use in adaptation to these changes.
This has propelled the royal kingdom of Belgium, The European union in partnership with the ministry of water and environment to collaborate with mubende district local government and come up with an initiative worth fourteen million Euros implementing a complementary set of activities in support of the global climate change alliance project framework in six target districts of the central cattle corridor to improve on the level of crop and livestock production especially setting up irrigation schemes and water reservoirs .
While launching the water reservoir project in Nakaseta village, Bugonzi parish, Kitenga sub county, the Belgian ambassador in uganda mr. Hugo Verbist said he is happy that their goals of improving on the standards of living of the locals in villages is being realized noting that irrigation is another way of beefing up ugandas agricultural sector through rain water harvesting as a raw material for agriculture.
Interacting with community beneficiaries from Balyejjusa Farmer Field School have expressed their gratitude to the foreign aid as they have learnt lessons from groups projects including tree nursery management, commercial passion fruit project supported through a grant from community driven development project and having acquired the water reservoirs and better water harvesting methods, they will be able to fight drought in their economic activities especially farming.
Mr. Kinene Vincent, the district natural resource officer has blamed the locals for misusing the environment like deforestation as a big factor to the current drought period being faced in the area which has affected crop and animal farming activities but he believes this water nitiative project will help the locals adjust to the climate and fight poverty.
It must be noted that recent changes in weather and climate have affected crop and livestock production and local community livelihoods in mubende district as locals lack appropriate knowledge about weather and climate or lack appropriate techniques for using in adaptation to these changes.
