PRIME MINISTER CRITICIZES OFFICIALS OVER REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT.

 

The prime minister has criticized officials from the disaster preparedness docket of relocating returnees from Sango Bay resettlement camp to Kyegegwa district without informing the local leaders.

 

Rugunda who rushed to Kyegewa district to diffuse disagreement between the local community and the returnees who started returning to this area on Friday said that he was astonished that the local community and local leaders were not aware about governments plan to settle the refugees in their area.

 

Ruhakana rugunda explained; “I was not aware of the movements taking place in this area and I wish to apologise on behalf of the government for carrying out this exercise without informing the local leaders and the community of Kyegegwa.

 

Rugunda added that “i strongly criticize the officers from the office of the prime minister that carried out this exercise without due information to the political leaders at the center and in the district leaders in future the district leaders must be brought routinely on board for any major movement of people takes place or major events or actions take place.”

 

Rugunda has also put in place a committee of 11 people that is chaired by the office of the prime minister which includes officials from the office of the prime minister, local leaders and representative from the affected community to help sensitize the existing community about governments program and resettle the new entrants with in a period of three months

 

Byamukama Rusoke the district chairperson narrated that” on 24/06/2016  as leaders we were shocked to find a crowd of people who had camped at Kazinga health center 111 yet there was no one to give explanation for their existence in this area , we are leaders  responsible for this area but we were left out about activities being carried out by government in our area.”

 

Owolo martain officer in charge disaster preparedness under the office of the prime minister explained that; we held a meeting with previous Kyegegwa district local council executive in Feb.2016 an drafted the godliness for this activity but we assumed that this information was carried on to the new leaders , we stand to be pardoned for this mistake .

 

Bafashaki Charles head of refugee settlement in the office of the prime minister explained we have been forced to relocate the refugees from Sango Bay resettlement camp after a huge number have fallen sick due the poor condition because this area is swampy thus resettling them to Kyaka 1 camp on Kyegegwa district.

 

Over 600 refugees have so far been resettled in Kyaka 1 and have camped at Kazinga health center iii in Rwentuha sub county in Kyegegwa district.

 

Kyegewa district is one of the districts with rampant land wrangles which are escalated by the influx of foreigners form the neighboring countries like Rwanda, Burundi and Congo that are looking for land to carry out agriculture.
